Scotland
In 1997 we went on a two-week tour of Scotland following a meeting that I had in Nottingham. Lil and the kids came on the last day of the meeting. They had to rent a car in London and drive it up to Nottingham. This should have been relatively straight-forward but of course they were doing this following an exhausting trans-Atlantic flight. Lil got going on the M25, the ring road around London going in the wrong direction and decided to take the M25 all the way around rather than get off and reverse course which would have required several merges. She said that the kids were both sleeping and of no help in navigation.
From Nottingham we drove up to the Yorkshire Dales, Hadrian’s Wall, Jedburgh, Edinburgh and then proceeded on a counterclockwise trip around the coast of Scotland, ending with an extended stay in the Isle of Skye and Glasgow. From Edinburgh we drove through Stirling, Golspie, Strathy Point, Tongue, Durness, Measach, and the Isle of Skye.

The Tattoo
One night we went to the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo at the castle for a world-famous show of music, dance and military marching. An odd thing happened at the show: at the beginning before the show begins, they announce the various large groups from many different cities and countries across the world who are in attendance that evening. We were surprised to hear that a group from Madison, Wisconsin, our hometown, was one of the featured groups.
Golspie Highland Games
We stopped at the small town of Golspie which happened to have a Highland Games festival, which was interesting to watch.
